My word or theme for the year was LOVE. At the end of last year it was very clear to me that LOVE was going to be my word, but it turns out it wasn’t for the reasons I’d thought (hoped) it would be. In September I went to my sister’s for the weekend and ended up staying nearly six weeks in total. My baby nephew was admitted to hospital two days after I arrived and I stayed to look after his brother full-time. I could not have gone home, I could not have left Noah while he was without his mummy, and by being there I enabled my sister to be where she was needed most, knowing everyone was okay at home. It was a terrible and scary time, yet there were many beautiful moments that I shall carry with me forever. I’m happy to report that Noah’s brother is now back at home and thriving even with the life-long condition the illness has left him. It was LOVE that got us all through that time. I didn’t know it was possible to love my family more than I already did, but it was. I do.
In this year, I am most grateful for my business. As long as I have my laptop and some internet connection I am able to run my business and despite having no intention to be a digital nomad, it’s because I’m self-employed — well, technically I’m now a company director! — I was able to stay at my sister’s for six weeks without even thinking twice about it. My business gives me that freedom and I am grateful for it every single day.
My favorite end-of-year tradition is filling out my Unravelling workbook by candle light. I shared the first workbook on my blog in December 2009. Back then it was just a four-page PDF that I’d put together in Word before asking my designer to “jazz it up”. I honestly didn’t know if anyone would download it but I knew it’d be fun to do with friends during an upcoming weekend together. Seven years later that humble 4-page PDF has morphed into a 30+ page workbook extravaganza! I love that I can look through my previous workbooks to see how my world’s changed and evolved. Sharing it with my community feels like a delicious way to give something back. It’s my favourite thing I do all year.
In 2017, it will be time for me. I have given so much of myself this year, I’m looking forward to extending that kindness and compassion back to my self in 2017.
In 2017, I will remember that I can do anything and everything when I’ve had enough sleep. Feeling truly rested is the most luxurious thing I can think of.
